ASUS WL-107g

Today I purchase a ASUS WL-107g PCMCIA Wireless card. It wasn’t hart to get it working under GNU/Linux (in my case Gentoo). Here is how it’s done:

1. The Drivers:
– you have an opportunity to choose between 2 sets of drivers, the closed source drivers wich came on the card CD-Rom along with some utilites from ASUS and the open source drivers wich are released under the terms of GNU General Public License. My choice was the second.

2. Installing open souce drivers.

NOTE: If you download the latest beta version of the drivers you need kernel 2.6.13 or higer.

2.1 Kernel configuration.

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig

Device Drivers —>
Network device support—>
[*]Network device support
>>>>Wireless Lan (no harm-radio)—>
>>>>>[*]Wireless LAN Drivers && Wireless Extentions

2.2 Drivers instalation

– download the drivers

– extract the archive (tar -xvvzf ….)

make && make install

read the readme :)

3. Utilites

– pcmcia-cs, iwconfig (man is your friend)

for gentoo users:
1. emerge -av pcmcia-cs wireless-tools
2. rc-update add pcmcia default
3. edit /etc/conf.d/pcmcia

Have fun.
